Something to PonderThis happened in June actually but it's a good story. Before the Virginia G.O. Team returned to the USA, I took them to GuongZhou for 3 days, 2 nights. With the help of my friend Handy, we saw the sights and learned explored Chinese culture up there. Handy had made most all the arrangements for us. Handy is a recent college graduate and doesn't have a lot of money. Not wanting to financially burden him we paid for his meals and bought his museum tickets and such. One day, while waiting for a bus I told him that we would pay for his bus fare. He insisted that he pay for all of us. In typical local fashion we began "arguing" over who should pay until Handy said, "I want to pay for your bus fare. I can't afford to pay for everyone's lunch or dinner, but I can afford to pay for the bus." Discussion settled. Nothing more to say. He paid for the bus. As I thought about this the significance of that moment struck a pretty deep chord in me. How important it is to let people do what they can do - be it a little or a lot. Paying for the bus is a relatively small thing - the cost almost insignificant to our budget. But had I been unwilling to submit to his desire to pay for the bus I would have been robbing him of opportunity to participate in a meaningful and significant way for him. Be it a little or a lot, a small thing or a large thing - we need to make sure that we always allow people the opportunity to do what they can according to the measure they have. |
